Fraction Division
What does division mean?
Division asks: how many groups or how much in each group?
Example: 6 ÷ 2 means split 6 into 2 equal groups.
6 ÷ 2 = 3
Division by a number
Dividing by a number n is the same as multiplying by 1 / n.
÷ n means x1n
For example, ÷ 3 means x13
So, 12 ÷ 3 = 12 x13 = 4
Fraction ÷ Whole Number
Let’s divide a fraction by a whole number:
12 ÷ 2
Change division into multiplication:
12 × 12
What is a reciprocal?
The reciprocal flips a fraction:
23 → 32
Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal.
Fraction ÷ Fraction
Example:
34 ÷ 25
Flip the second fraction:
34 × 52
Why does this work?
Multiplication and division are opposites.
Dividing by a fraction asks: “How many of these fit?”
Multiplying by the reciprocal gives the same result.
Big Idea
Fraction division is not new math.
It is just fraction multiplication in disguise.
